Gingwatzim are spirits of raw energy from the astral plane, where they reside. There are six species of gingwatzim: the tim, pakim, graegzim, eoluzim, maronzim, and naranzim. Originally conjured to this plane by the wizard Castanamir, the secrets of their summoning have spread, but are still considered rare knowledge.
Once the spirit, the free form, has been bound into service it may also be given an animate or inanimate form. Once bound into one of these forms, the gingwatzim may not return to the astral plane unless it is freed by the summoner, it is slain in free form or animate form, or broken while in inanimate form. Once the forms have been chosen, they are invariable. For example, if a gingwatzim is bound as a raven and as a dagger +1, these are the only forms it may assume when shifting from form to form.
Control of the gingwatzim is transferred with possession of the spirit when it is in its inanimate form. This is the only means by which someone who is not a conjurer could become the owner and commander of a gingwatzim.
